Our minds turn more toward the birth of Jesus these days. Whether we like it or not we likely hear songs about His birth or see nativity scenes in front of homes along streets. While remembering the birth of Jesus is noble and necessary, I have been thinking about his earthly father Joseph. Matthew records in his account that Joseph being a just man and not willing to make Mary a public example was minded to put her away privily. A few character traits about Joseph are noteworthy. He was a just man. He was pure. He was respectful and kind. He made decisions thoughtfully and prayerfully. He was a just man. He lived in harmony with the character and laws of God. He continually tried to conform to God’s standards. He was pure. Joseph wanted to marry a woman who was also pure. The Greek word we translate just or righteous also has the meaning of holy or virtuous. He was respectful and kind. Divine love in Joseph motivated him to cover for Mary and to put her away without public reproach. I am sure as a just man the sin he believed Mary committed grieved him. However, his respect and kindness governed how he treated her. He made his decision thoughtfully and prayerfully. The scripture says that while he thought on these things behold an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream. All of the above characteristics of Joseph were born out of a prayerful walk with God. No one can have a character like Joseph without first being a man or woman of prayer. May we too walk thoughtfully and prayerfully. ~Harold R Troyer
